Il profondo si forma grazie alla confluenza del profondo di Friedeburg e del profondo di Neustadt, circa 2,7 km a sud-est di Neustadtgödens. Inizialmente si dirige verso sud-est, attraversa l'A 29, la L 815, la linea ferroviaria Oldenburg–Wilhelmshaven e presso Ellenserdammersiel la Grodenstraße. Successivamente, il profondo assume un percorso ondulato verso est, creato tra il 1993 e il 2001 attraverso l'estrazione di argilla. I laghi creati in questo modo fanno parte dal 2011 dell'area di protezione del paesaggio "Marschen am Jadebusen–West". Dalla febbraio 2019, il profondo di Ellenserdammer e i laghi estratti si trovano nell'area di protezione del paesaggio "Teichfledermausgewässer", designata per la salvaguardia della zona FFH "Habitat della vespa d'acqua nel territorio di Wilhelmshaven".
