Il carcere di Weiterstadt è stato inaugurato nel 1997. Dopo un periodo di costruzione di dodici anni, i primi detenuti sono stati trasferiti dal penitenziario di Francoforte-Preungesheim. La lunga durata dei lavori è stata causata dal fatto che il carcere di Weiterstadt è stato quasi completamente distrutto il 27 marzo 1993 a causa di un attacco dinamitardo della Frazione dell'Esercito Rosso. I danni sono stati stimati tra ottanta e novanta milioni di DM.
