Rodez è una città bimillenaria: la sua fondazione risalirebbe al V secolo a.C., quando una popolazione celtica dell'Europa centrale, i Ruteni, si stabilì a sud dell'Alvernia per fondare un oppidum caratteristico della civiltà gallica.
