Durante la rivolta della Comune del 1871, la colonna fu abbattuta su proposta del pittore Gustave Courbet con l'intenzione di riutilizzare il bronzo per i cannoni, ma dopo la soppressione della rivolta, la colonna fu nuovamente eretta per ordine del maresciallo Mac-Mahon, presidente della Repubblica francese. I costi per la ricostruzione furono addebitati a Courbet, che avrebbe dovuto pagare ogni anno 10.000 franchi, equivalenti a circa 43.000 euro. Tuttavia, morì in esilio prima che potesse essere pagata la prima rata.
