Grenoble è un comune del Sud-Est della Francia, situato nella regione Alvernia-Rodano-Alpi, capoluogo del dipartimento dell'Isère, ex capitale del Delfinato. Grenoble è il comune centrale della seconda agglomerazione della regione Alvernia-Rodano-Alpi per numero di abitanti, dopo quella di Lione, ed il terzo comune di questa regione, dietro Lione e Saint-Étienne. La sua agglomerazione di 450.000 abitanti è anche la più grande metropoli delle Alpi, davanti a Innsbruck, la cui agglomerazione conta 300.000 abitanti, e Bolzano, il che le vale il soprannome, in Francia, di « capitale delle Alpi ».
