L'arcidiocesi di Besançon è una sede metropolitana della Chiesa cattolica in Francia. Nel 2018 contava 567.000 battezzati su 614.375 abitanti. È retta dall'arcivescovo Jean-Luc Marie Maurice Louis Bouilleret.
Vesontio era la capitale ed il principale centro del popolo dei Sequani; all'epoca di Diocleziano divenne metropoli della provincia romana della Maxima Sequanorum, come attestato dalla Notitia Galliarum dell'inizio del V secolo.
