Il Canal latéral à la Loire fu costruito tra il 1827 e il 1838 per collegare il Canal de Briare a Briare e il Canal du Centre a Digoin, per una distanza di 196 chilometri. Sostituì l'uso del fiume Loire, che era inaffidabile durante le inondazioni invernali e le siccità estive. Furono utilizzati acquedotti per attraversare l'Allier a Le Guétin e la Loire a Digoin. Tuttavia, a causa dell'estrema lunghezza richiesta, un acquedotto non fu costruito per attraversare la Loire a Briare fino al 1896, quando fu costruito l'acquedotto di Briare.
