È qui nel 1798 che Napoleone partì con il suo esercito per un'invasione dell'Egitto. Non meno di 200 scienziati si unirono alle truppe per sfruttare l'occasione, in modo molto opportunistico, per raccogliere «informazioni» in Egitto. Una persona che voleva unirsi era il famoso scienziato ed esploratore Alexander von Humboldt. Tentò di raggiungerli tramite Marsiglia, ma senza successo.
