La stazione è stata aperta al pubblico a maggio del 1903 dalla Great Eastern Railway , passando sotto la London & North Eastern Railway nel 1923 e infine al London Underground nel 1948, anno in cui è cominciato il servizio della linea Central.
Nel 1958 è stato chiuso lo scalo merci.
Negli anni la stazione ha subito pochissime modifiche e per questo rimane a tutt'oggi un bell'esempio di stazione in stile edoardiano.
