Nel 1986 fu indetta una gara per una scultura all'aperto in occasione del 200° anniversario della città di Reykjavík. "Zon Voyager" di Jón Gunnar vinse la competizione, e il modello in alluminio (42,5 x 88 x 36 cm) fu presentato alla città per l'esecuzione. Il Zon Voyager a grandezza naturale fu infine svelato su Sæbraut nel giorno dell'anniversario della città di Reykjavík, il 18 agosto 1990.
L'opera è realizzata in acciaio inossidabile ed è posta su un cerchio di lastre di granito, circondata da quello che è stato definito "beton da municipio". È stata costruita in conformità con il disegno in grande scala di Jón Gunnar di Sun Voyager ed è stata guidata dall'assistente di Jón Gunnar, l'artista Kristinn E. Hrafnsson. La tecnica della scultura è stata supervisionata dal tecnologo Sigurjón Yngvason, in stretta collaborazione con lo stesso Jón Gunnar.
