L'industria dell'intaglio del legno è fiorente in Val Gardena fin dal XVII secolo. Dal XIX secolo, statue e altari provenienti dalla regione vengono spediti alle chiese cattoliche di tutto il mondo. Nel XIX e XX secolo, l'intaglio di giocattoli in legno era un'attività così diffusa tra tutte le famiglie della Val Gardena che Amelia Edwards definì Ortisei la "capitale del paese dei giocattoli". La più famosa è la bambola di legno Peg, che ebbe grande popolarità in tutta Europa e America nel XIX secolo. La chiesa parrocchiale di Ortisei ospita una ricca collezione di statue scolpite da artisti locali negli ultimi due secoli.
