Nel golfo della Spezia, nel 1822, annegò il poeta Percy Shelley, marito di Mary Shelley. La sua barca a vela affondò durante una tempesta. Da Livorno tornò a Lerici. Il suo corpo è stato ritrovato sulla riva nei pressi di Viareggio.
Mary Shelly è famosa soprattutto per il suo romanzo Frankenstein. Percy Shelley fu anche un noto poeta inglese. Erano buoni amici di Lord Byron e del medico James Lind, che condusse esperimenti con l'elettricità sulle rane. Non è improbabile che abbia ispirato il romanzo Frankenstein.
