Amelia è situata nella zona sud-ovest dell'Umbria, vicino al confine con il Lazio. Il territorio comunale è posto all'estremità sud della catena subappenninica dei monti Amerini. La città dà il nome al comprensorio dell'Amerino, nella Valle del Tevere, che riunisce nove comuni: Amelia, Montecastrilli, Avigliano Umbro, Penna in Teverina, Lugnano in Teverina, Guardea, Alviano, Attigliano e Giove.
