Località marittima di villeggiatura affacciata sul Mar Ligure, prende il nome dall'omonimo fortino che sorge al centro della città, voluta dal granduca Leopoldo a difesa dell'approdo, e dai marmi che dalle Alpi Apuane, poco distanti, venivano trasportati fino al pontile per poi prendere la via del mare.
