Il territorio comunale è piuttosto vasto ed è distribuito tra la bassa collina, con le prime propaggini dell'Appennino ligure, nella zona di produzione vitivinicola DOC dei colli piacentini., nella parte sud del territorio, che si presenta in gran parte boscata, e l'estremità meridionale della pianura Padana, nella parte nord del comune. La parte occidentale, compreso il capoluogo, è situata in val Luretta, sulla sponda destra del torrente Luretta, che funge da confine con il comune di Agazzano, mentre quella orientale in val Trebbia, sulla sponda sinistra del fiume Trebbia, che funge da confine con i comuni di Gossolengo e Rivergaro.
