È conosciuta come "città bruniana" per aver dato i natali al filosofo Giordano Bruno, e anche come "città dei Gigli" per la secolare Festa dei Gigli che si tiene annualmente nel mese di giugno .
Il centro storico e i ritrovamenti archeologici della zona ne testimoniano le origini antiche: gli Etruschi, nel VII secolo a.C., la fondarono con il nome Hyria e successivamente i Sanniti, dopo averla conquistata e ricostruita, la chiamarono Nuvla . Lo scrittore latino Svetonio, nelle Vite dei Cesari, riporta che l'imperatore romano Augusto morì apud Nolam . A Nola inoltre, nel 1754, il vescovo e santo Alfonso Maria de' Liguori scrisse il celebre canto natalizio "Tu scendi dalle stelle".
