La basilica di San Petronio ha un orologio solare a forma di linea meridiana incorporato nel pavimento del corridoio sinistro. Questo risale al 1655. È stato calcolato e progettato dal famoso astronomo Giovanni Domenico Cassini, che insegnava astronomia all'Università. Con i suoi 66,8 metri, è il più lungo orologio solare del mondo. La basilica di San Petronio è la chiesa principale di Bologna. È la quinta chiesa più grande del mondo: 132 metri di lunghezza e 60 di larghezza, con la volta alta 45 metri all'interno e 51 metri nella facciata. Può contenere circa 28.000 persone. La prima pietra della costruzione fu posata il 7 giugno 1390.
