Il Gran Sasso d'Italia è il massiccio montuoso più alto degli Appennini e dell'Italia peninsulare, situato interamente in Abruzzo, nella dorsale più orientale dell'Appennino abruzzese, al confine fra le province di L'Aquila, Teramo e Pescara.
Composto da diversi e adiacenti gruppi montuosi e compreso tra i Monti della Laga a nord-ovest , il teramano a nord-est, la piana di Assergi e la Conca Aquilana a sud-ovest, la Piana di Navelli e la Valle del Tirino a sud, le Gole di Popoli a sud-est, è un'area ambientale tutelata con l'istituzione del parco nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga e su di esso ricadevano la comunità montana Gran Sasso e la comunità montana Campo Imperatore-Piana di Navelli.
