L'Hotel l'albergo di Campo Imperatore è un punto di riferimento alla fine della salita al Gran Sasso d'Italia. Ma è anche un importante sito storico. Questo hotel divenne la prigione del dittatore Benito Mussolini nell'agosto del 1943 dopo la sua caduta fino a quando non fu liberato da un commando tedesco nel settembre 1943. Adolf Hitler ordinò al capitano delle SS Otto Skorzeny di liberarlo. 90 commando furono inviati in alianti sul Gran Sasso. Hitler pensava che il salvataggio del Duce sarebbe stato una spinta per i fascisti in Italia. Quando Mussolini fu liberato, si dice che abbia detto: "Sapevo che il mio amico non mi avrebbe dimenticato".
