Il nome è “Castello Estense”, ma dal 1598 la celebre dinastia estense fu espulsa da Ferrara dallo Stato Pontificio. Quando la regina Cristina di Svezia visitò la città nel novembre del 1655, fu ricevuta dal cardinale legato Alderano Cybo.
