La Fontana Pretoria fu collocata nel XVI secolo sulla Piazza Pretoria, costruita appositamente per la fontana.
La fontana fu originariamente commissionata dal viceré spagnolo di Napoli Pedro Álvarez de Toledo per la sua villa fiorentina da alcuni scultori fiorentini . Don Pedro morì però prima che i lavori fossero completati nel 1554, e suo figlio vendette la fontana alla città di Palermo nel 1573. Nello stesso anno fu costruita una piazza davanti al Palazzo Pretorio , oggi sede del Comune, e al Vi furono riuniti la chiesa domenicana di Santa Caterina e i 644 pezzi della fontana.
La fontana ha una circonferenza di 133 metri ed è alta 12 metri . La fontana contiene molte statue di dee fluviali e ninfe. Poiché la maggior parte delle statue sono nude, la fontana è chiamata anche Fontana della Vergogna . La fontana fu completamente restaurata alla fine del XX secolo.
