La Moldavia , formalmente Repubblica di Moldavia , è uno Stato dell'Europa orientale racchiuso tra Romania e Ucraina, senza sbocco sul mare. Capitale dello Stato è la città di Chișinău.
La popolazione ammonta a circa 3.547.539 abitanti. La Moldavia fu uno Stato autonomo popolato principalmente da abitanti di lingua neolatina , a lungo tributario dell'Impero Ottomano, tra la fondazione nel XIV secolo e il XVIII secolo, quando venne spartita fra Turchi, Russi e Austriaci ; la parte orientale, corrispondente all'attuale stato indipendente, venne occupata dall'Unione Sovietica nel 1940, nell'ambito dell'accordo Molotov-Von Ribbentrop, ma fu successivamente occupata dalle truppe dell'Asse nel 1941 durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Dal 1944 al 1991 fu annessa all'URSS e trasformata in una Repubblica Socialista Sovietica, che dichiarò l'indipendenza il 27 agosto dello stesso anno.
