La Waag ebbe origine già nel 1488 quando una parte di essa fu costruita come "Porta di Sant'Antonio" come porta della città. Nel XVII secolo, la città era piuttosto in espansione e questa porta della città aveva perso la sua funzione originaria poiché gran parte della città si trovava già al di fuori di essa. Questo non valeva solo per la Waag, ma anche per l'intera cinta muraria costruita nel XV-XVI secolo. Oggi rimangono solo la "Torre di Schreier", la "Waag", la "Torre di Montelbaan" e la "Torre Regolare" (la parte inferiore della Torre della Moneta) a testimoniare quella muratura cittadina. Poiché le porte della città avevano perso la loro funzione di ingressi, la Porta di Sant'Antonio fu trasformata nel 1618 in una casa di pesatura: da qui il nome 'La Waag'.
