Nei fossati della Geulhemmerberg nel sud del Limburgo si possono vedere strati di argilla depositati subito dopo l'impatto meteorico che segna la fine del Cretaceo. Fino ad allora, i dinosauri dominavano la terra, ma tutto finì con un enorme boato. L'impatto di un asteroide di dieci chilometri sullo Yucatan, nell'attuale Messico, causò il collasso di tutti gli ecosistemi terrestri e gran parte degli ecosistemi marini sulla Terra. Il colpo provocò una crisi climatica violenta e i dinosauri e gli organismi marini come gli ammoniti si estinsero con l'impatto o subito dopo.
