I Buren hanno un forte legame con la famiglia reale olandese. Da qui anche il nome "Oranjestad". Qui Willem van Oranje sposò Anna van Buren nel 1551. La regina Beatrix è anche contessa di Buren. E il principe Willem Alexander partecipò alla Elfstedentocht del 1986 sotto lo pseudonimo W.A. van Buren.
