Probabilmente il villaggio deve il suo nome alla famiglia Osse, che gestiva una chiusa (Zijl). Oggi la chiusa non è più in uso. Soprattutto in estate Ossenzijl attira molti turisti che passano una giornata a De Weerribben. Ossenzijl si trova in parte nell'area naturale De Weerribben e questa zona è stata già scelta come il posto più bello dei Paesi Bassi.
