Si trova a sud di Makkum, a sud-ovest di Idsegahuizum e a nord di Gaast. Il nucleo del villaggio si trova sul Zeedijk del IJsselmeer. Tra Zeedijk e il villaggio si trova il Dijkvaart. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 50 abitanti. Sotto il villaggio rientra anche la frazione Kooihuizen. Di fronte a quest'ultima si trova la riserva naturale Kooiwaard e di fronte a Piaam stessa il Zuidwaard nell'IJsselmeer, l'ex Zuiderzee.
