Le chiuse di IJmuiden costituiscono ad IJmuiden il collegamento tra il Canale della Noordsea e il Mare del Nord.
Il complesso delle chiuse è composto dalla Chiusa Meridionale del 1876, dalla Chiusa Centrale del 1896, dalla Chiusa Settentrionale del 1929, dalle Chiuse di Sfiato e dal Pompa. A ovest delle chiuse si trova l'Isola Forte, parte della Fortificazione di Amsterdam.
Per anni la Chiusa Settentrionale è stata la più grande chiusa di navigazione dei Paesi Bassi e d'Europa. A causa dell'aumento delle dimensioni delle navi, questa chiusa è diventata un collo di bottiglia per la navigazione verso il Porto di Amsterdam. Il comune di Amsterdam desidera una nuova, ancora più grande, quarta chiusa marittima per fare spazio al crescente traffico marittimo. L'anno desiderato per l'apertura di questa chiusa è il 2016; le dimensioni della chiusa saranno 500 metri di lunghezza, 65 metri di larghezza e 18 metri di profondità.
