Si trova a nord-est di Joure e a nord-ovest di Heerenveen, lungo il Nuovo Canale di Heerenveen. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 390 abitanti. Sotto il villaggio si trova anche il frazione di Tweehuis. Vegelinsoord è nata nella seconda metà del XIX secolo come Stobbegat durante l'estrazione su larga scala di torba nella regione. Il villaggio si trova nel De Haskerveenpolder. Il nome del frazione era stato dato dal corso d'acqua omonimo su cui si trovava. L'attuale nome Vegelinsoord è riconducibile alla famiglia Vegelin van Claerbergen, che ha svolto un ruolo importante nella regione.
