La barriera del Oosterschelde è una barriera idrica, parte dei lavori del Delta. È anche una connessione stradale lunga 8 chilometri tra Schouwen-Duiveland e Noord-Beveland, parte della N57.
Questa barriera idrica è una barriera mobile contro le tempeste e contiene grandi paratoie che possono essere chiuse durante tempeste forti, sia in combinazione con un'alta marea, in modo che le acque alte non possano entrare nell'Oosterschelde. Con un livello d'acqua previsto di +3,00 m sopra il livello del mare, le paratoie vengono chiuse dalla sala di controllo nell'Ir. J.W. Topshuis a Neeltje Jans. Se non ci sono persone presenti, le paratoie si chiuderanno automaticamente a +3 m sopra il livello del mare. Dalla messa in servizio nel 1986, le paratoie sono state chiuse 19 volte, escluse le chiusure di prova.
