Washington D.C. è la capitale degli Stati Uniti d'America, con una popolazione di 672 228 abitanti . Si trova sulla costa orientale degli Stati Uniti a circa 50 km dal mare, a sud dello stato del Maryland, a nord dello stato della Virginia e a 374 km circa a sud di New York.
La città di Washington coincide territorialmente e politicamente con il Distretto di Columbia , di cui è parte integrante. Infatti, mentre in origine il distretto comprendeva le contee di Washington ed Alexandria , in seguito ad un referendum del 1846 quest'ultima è tornata allo stato della Virginia e ha cambiato nome in Contea di Arlington.
