Il massacro del Washita si svolse il 27 novembre 1868 quando il 7º cavalleria del tenente colonnello George Armstrong Custer attaccò l'accampamento dei Cheyenne meridionali di Black Kettle lungo il fiume Washita , parte di un importante campo invernale indiano.
Dopo che Cheyenne meridionali e Arapaho ebbero firmato il trattato di Medicine Lodge, gli fu chiesto di trasferirsi a sud dagli attuali Kansas e Colorado in una nuova riserva del territorio indiano . Questo li obbligò a rinunciare al loro territorio tradizionale in cambio di una piccola terra arabile lontana dai bisonti, loro principale fonte di carne e centro della loro cultura. Mesi di fragile pace sopravvissero alle razzie tra Kaw e Cheyenne meridionali.
