Scherpenheuvel is vooral als bedevaartsoord bekend. De barokke Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebasiliek van Scherpenheuvel is al sinds de zestiende eeuw een belangrijk bedevaartsoord voor katholieke gelovigen. Anno 2005 is het de meest bezochte bedevaartplaats van België. Er wordt een klein houten beeldje vereerd van de Maagd Maria, dat wonderdadig zou zijn.
