Buggenhout is een plaats en gemeente in de provincie Oost-Vlaanderen in België. De gemeente telt ruim 13.500 inwoners. De gemeente is bekend om zijn bos (Buggenhout-bos), het grootste staatsbos van Oost-Vlaanderen met de boskapel, het geografisch middelpunt van Vlaanderen, nabij het drieprovinciënpunt, het raakpunt tussen Oost-Vlaanderen, Antwerpen en Vlaams-Brabant.
Buggenhout lag van de karolingische tijd tot de elfde eeuw in de gouw Brabant . Van de elfde eeuw tot het einde van de achttiende eeuw maakte het deel uit van het kwartier Brussel van het hertogdom Brabant. In de late Middeleeuwen moest een soort gemengde Brabants-Vlaamse commissie er geregeld de (grens)palen controleren.
De Fransen deelden Buggenhout in 1796 in bij het Scheldedepartement, dat in 1815 werd omgevormd tot provincie Oost-Vlaanderen.
