Aalter is een gemeente in de Belgische provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, in de regio Meetjesland. De gemeente telt bijna 29.000 inwoners, die Aalternaars worden genoemd.Archeologische vondsten uit de voorbije decennia tonen aan dat er op het grondgebied Aalter reeds bewoning was tijdens de prehistorie. Er werden een aantal stenen artefacten gevonden op een aantal paleontologische sites. Ze dateren mogelijk van 3000 tot 2000 voor het begin van onze jaartelling. Archeologen vonden ook de restanten van een bronzen bijl, die volgens onderzoek tussen 1200 en 1000 v.Chr. moet vervaardigd zijn.
