Tienen is een stad en gemeente in de Belgische provincie Vlaams-Brabant, in het noorden van het Haspengouws Plateau. De stad telt 35.000 inwoners en ligt op een hoogte van 40 meter. Met een oppervlakte van 72,77 km² is Tienen de grootste gemeente van de provincie Vlaams-Brabant.Robert Rock meent dat Tienen een germanisering is van het Keltische 'duno', wat "heuvel, versterking op een heuvel, versterking" betekent. De naam zou etymologisch ook kunnen opklimmen tot het Gallische 'tigerno, tigunno', wat eveneens betekent: hoogtepunt, hoofd, verhevenheid. De auteur wijst op de overeenstemming met de Tiense topografie, met de Sint-Germanusheuvel waarrond de stad ontstond.
