Wist je dat er in het Josaphatpark nog ezels gehouden worden omdat Schaarbeek bekend is als 'de ezelsgemeente'. Vroeger kweekten de Schaarbekenaars 'kerselaren' (kersenbomen) of 'kriekelaren'. Terwijl kersen zoet zijn, hebben krieken een nogal zure smaak. De Schaarbekenaars hadden het privilege om hun fruit op ezels naar de Brusselse markt te brengen om ze aan de brouwers van krieklambiek te verkopen. Wanneer de kriekenverkopers aankwamen, riepen de Brusselaars: "Hei! Doë zên die êzels van Schoerebeik!" (Hee, daar zijn die ezels van Schaarbeek!). Op een bepaald ogenblik zouden er zelfs evenveel ezels als mensen in Schaarbeek gewoond hebben.
