Na 169 jaar bouwen (1352-1521) verrees de kathedraal met zijn 123 meter hoogte boven Antwerpen. Het is het grootste gotische bouwwerk van de Nederlanden. De kathedraal is een enorme schatkamer met verschillende kunstwerken van onder andere Rubens. Na twintig jaar restauratie schittert de zevenbeukige kerk opnieuw in al haar architectonische pracht. Blikvangers zijn zeker Rubens’ 'Kruisoprichting' en 'Kruisafneming'. Een bezoek aan Antwerpen zonder de kathedraal te zien, is ondenkbaar.
De plek
Hou na het bezoek aan de kathedraal zeker halt bij bistro de Plek, dat een interior design award won. Voor de Plek werd de voormalige Sint-Janskapel achter de sacristie omgebouwd tot een gezellige ontmoetingsruimte voor bewoners, toeristen, kerkgangers. Je kan er terecht voor een drankje en een hapje. Bierliefhebber? Proef dan zeker het kathedraalbier, verkrijgbaar in blond en donker.
