Reeds vóór 1940 was deze vliegbasis in gebruik bij de Belgische Luchtmacht. Vanaf 1940 werd ze door de Duitse Luftwaffe gebruikt, met name om Britse bommenwerpers aan te vallen en te vernietigen.Vanaf 1946 zetelde hier de Belgische luchtmacht. In de nabijheid was onder meer een luchtmacht-opleidingscentrum, zie Kasteel Rochendaal. In 1996 trok de luchtmacht zich terug en kwam er een plan om het geheel een andere bestemming te geven: 19 ha recreatie, 200 ha landbouw en 84 ha bos en natuur. Ook werd een ringweg aangelegd. De startbaan bleef gehandhaafd. Het geheel werd echter sterk verwaarloosd.
