Westerlo is een plaats en gemeente in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen. De gemeente telt meer dan 25.000 inwoners en is de hoofdplaats van het kieskanton en het gerechtelijk kanton Westerlo.Westerlo komt voor de eerste maal in de geschriften voor omstreeks het jaar duizend, wanneer het door gouwgraaf Ansfried aan de kerk van Utrecht werd geschonken. Deze schenking vond plaats niet lang nadat Ansfried op verzoek van keizer Otto III tot bisschop van Utrecht was gewijd.
