Op maandag 24 augustus komt de jonge Georges Hancotte, tegen het einde van de namiddag, te voet vanuit Franière naar Floreffe.
Net voor het bos van Nangot zijn twee huizenblokken gesplitst door een smalle steeg. Georges ziet daar enkele Franse soldaten zitten en misschien spreekt hij hen aan ? We weten het niet...
Hier aangekomen, aan de voet van de Abdij, stopt hij om een Duitse patrouille ruiters voorbij te laten gaan. Deze hebben de Fransen waarschijnlijk opgemerkt en een Duiste onderoffocier vraagt aan Georges of hij Franse soldaten heeft gezien... Hij antwoordt van niet...
Voor die leugen, trekt de Duitser zijn pistool en schiet Georges koudweg neer. Het is 5 uur 's namiddags.
Dit kruis herinnert ons aan deze tragische gebeurtenis.
