In en rond het natuurgebied Bergerven komen zowel natte broekbossen als droge bossen voor. Beiden herbergen een heleboel typische plant- en diersoorten.
Op de drogere gronden komen zowel naaldbomen voor, als voedselarm eiken-berkenbos dat van nature voorkomt op deze grond. Limburgs Landschap vzw vormt de aangeplante naaldbossen geleidelijk aan om, door uitdunning, tot dat natuurlijke eiken-berkenbos. Op de kleine open plekken die ontstaan hebben zaailingen van eik of berk de kans om te ontkiemen en zo geleidelijk aan uit te groeien tot een eiken-berkenbos.
