'Bébèr' werd gecreëerd om het folkloristisch belang van de ezel voor Lombardsijde te beklemtonen. Jaarlijks trekt in maart hiervoor de ezelsstoet uit. Voor het dorp was vroeger de tuinbouw de belangrijkste activiteit en ezels waren hierbij het geprefereerde vervoermiddel. Auteur is Patrick Steen, die zich als assemblagekunstenaar heeft toegelegd op het doen herleven van oude materialen. 'Bébèr' is ontstaan uit oude (landbouw)voertuigen. Ze werden gered, herschikt en ontrukt aan een vorig leven om uit te groeien tot een kunstwerk. 'Bébèr' is een kunstzinnige reïncarnatie, als dankbaarheid aan een generatie lang en hard werken.
