Waar water is staan of stonden molens. Langs de Herk in Wellen kan je nog de Graetermolen en Wellenmolen zien. Je staat nu bij de Graetermolen. De beide molens waren ooit actief als graanwatermolens. De bedding van de Herk werd voor deze molens al in de 13de eeuw verlegd van het laagst gelegen deel van de vallei iets hogerop. Deze verlegging en later de rechttrekking, verbreding en verdieping van de Herk heeft een grote impact gehad op de waterhuishouding van het gebied. Om nog maar te zwijgen over de waterkwaliteit. Gelukkig neemt die beetje bij beetje toe door betere waterzuivering en aansluitingen op de riolering. En dat is goed voor de natuur in zowel de Broekbeemd als de Grote Beemd.
