In de naam Bornem herken je zonder meer bron en heim, dus verblijfplaats bij de bron. Op de markt bevindt zich de kerk van Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe en Sint-Leodegarius. De torenvoet dateert uit de 12de eeuw, de bovenbouw van de toren is van 1840. Het vroegere gemeentehuis, het Landhuis, werd in 1913 herbouwd op de plaats van een 18de-eeuws landhuis.
