Sinds de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw leeft het idee om van een open ruimte tussen de Kerkstraat, de Normandlaan en de Duinenweg een park te maken. Het werd uiteindelijk pas gerealiseerd in 1991.
Er waren genoeg ideeën voor dit stuk grond midden de toeristische zone, zoals een nieuw marktplein, verkavelen met luxe-villa’s, parkeerruimte, een bejaardentehuis,… maar men kwam nooit tot een consensus.
Uiteindelijk wordt in 1989 de parking naast het park aangelegd. Het park zelf gaat open rond Pasen 1991, maar kreeg nooit geen officiële openingsplechtigheid wegens interne, politieke strubbelingen.
Het gemeentelijk park is dagelijks open van 9.00 u. tot zonsondergang.
