De abdij van Tussenbeek, een Norbertinessenklooster, bezat tussen 1148 en 1783 vele gronden in de omgeving. Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, behoorde ook het huidge natuurgebied Nonnenbos tot het klooster van Tussenbeke. Het gebied kent veel restanten van oude vijvers. De ondergrond in vele delen van het bos is vochtig en moerassig en een ideale biotoop voor vele diertjes en planten.
