Likeuren De Gent was tot 2023 een begrip in het Hageland als de langst bestaande, nog actieve producent van likeuren. Er werd geen waardige opvolger gevonden en de zaak werd einde 2023 gesloten. In 1927 kocht ‘Toine’ De Gent het materiaal op van de Aarschotse stokerij van André Douwen en installeerde de productie in Betekom. Sterproduct was de jenever ‘Kemp’sche Boeren’, die vandaag nog in de rekken te vinden zijn. Hoe meer ‘boeren’ op het etiket, hoe sterker de drank. De zaak draaide goed en Toine leverde in de ruime omtrek. Maar het is zijn zoon ‘Mil’ die met zijn feilloze smaak de zaak groot zou maken en verschillende legendarische likeuren naar de heersende trends in de markt zette: Elixir De Gent, Goldwasser, IJskristal, Honingrhum, … De klanten kwamen vooral in de winkel, want zoals Mil getuigde: ‘Goede marchandise, dan blijven de mensen komen. Contente mensen zorgen voor goede mond-aan-mond reclame.’
Mil overleed in 2018, maar de zaak is vandaag (anno 2021) nog steeds springlevend.
