Description

Op deze plaats werd, ter vervanging van een hier sinds 1890 geplaatste gietijzeren fontein, in 1909 het standbeeld opgericht van de humanist, latinist en historicus Justus Lipsius (Overijse 1547 - Leuven 1606), vanaf 1592 professor aan de Leuvense universiteit. Het bestaat uit een hoge arduinen sokkel in neoclassicistische stijl, gesigneerd "J. JOURDAIN - SCULPTEUR" en "H. VAES. V. CRETEN - ARCHITECTES" en bronzen beeld gegoten door Felix Van Aerschodt (zie inscriptie). Het monument werd door de Belgische Staat aan de Stad geschonken naar aanleiding van de 75ste verjaardag van de heroprichting (1834-1909) van de Leuvense Katholieke Universiteit, zie het opschrift "JUSTO.LIPSIO/ IN.ALMA.UNIVERSITATE/ LOVANIENSI.PROFESSORI/ A.D.MCMIX.RESTITUAE/ UNIVERSITATIS.LXXV/ LEOPOLDO.II/ REGE. BELGARUM".
