De Zavel is een wijk in het historische hart van Brussel, aan de rand van de 12e-eeuwse versterkingen.
Zeer waarschijnlijk won men hier in het verleden zand . In 1304 verkocht het Sint-Jansgasthuis dit terrein aan de gilde van de kruisboogschutters die hier een kerk bouwden. Voorheen had de plaats gediend om de doden van het hospitaal te begraven. De Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Zavelkerk valt op door haar 14 m hoge glasramen; de middelen om een toren te bouwen ontbraken.
